Roots in Helsinki since 1908

Pekka Väyrynen and his wife Hilda (née Lindroos) founded Primula in 1908 in Helsinki. Initially, the company included a bakery and two bakery stores. Pekka managed the company until 1940, after which Pekka's son Tauno took over and enjoyed his role for over 30 years. Tauno Väyrynen also served as the long-term chairman of the Finnish Bakers' Association.

Primula's bakery was originally located at Bulevardi 28, until it moved to Laivurinkatu 10 in 1919. There bakery operated until 1965, when new premises on Teollisuuskatu attracted them. In the mid-2000s, Primula's market share of the small and medium-sized bread market in the PK region was approximately 10% and of Artesan breads approximately 15%.

In addition to the bakery, Primula had many cafés and restaurants in the capital region in the latter half of the 20th century. For example, in 1975, Primula had ten cafés in Helsinki and one in Espoo, as well as several restaurants. Well-known names from history include the Lido dance restaurant, the Laivuri and Primula restaurants, Primula Kulma in Mansku 12, Bakers, Vespa on Etelä-Esplanadi, the legendary Kaarle XII on Kasarmikatu, and Aitta in Tervasaari.

In 2010, Primula completed the largest investment in its history, building a new factory in Järvenpää. After the company went bankrupt, Perheleipurit became the new owner, and since 2023, Primula has been part of the Turku-based Leipomo Salonen Group. Currently, the company focuses on baking frozen breads that are baked on site in stores, which we deliver throughout Finland and to selected locations in Central Europe.
